Dawn of the Scope!

Well.. long time.. you know.. i have been zoo busy updating my Facebook profile.. and hang out with virtual friends.. that i totally forgot this old school .. blog thingy..

Anyway.. small changes to studio setup.. i have started to move back to the scope platform again. This time i am using an external computer which does the scope work, while i am still using my iMac for logic (sequencer)
anyway the gear list is now:
* Crewamware Noah
* Novation Nova
* Waldorf Blofeld
* Emu e6400 Ultra
* MOTU 828mk2 (sound card)
* Korg ES-1
* Technics WSA1
* Akai MPD26 (midi drum pads)
* Some cheaper mic's
* PC computer running Windows 7 and Sonic-Core SCOPE 5.1 with 21 DSP.
* MAC G4 running OS 9 and Sonic-Core SCOPE 4 with 9 DSP.
For now i am using the SCOPE for mastering (with the excellent BRICKWALL limiter from DAS, together with the MasterIT EQ from DAS)
But also during production as a fx box where i use the SC-Plante (Sonic Timeworks).. Great stuff!
I hope that i can utilize it even more, by moving the ADAT i am using today for the Fostex converter and route it to the sonic-core giving me 8 in/out to the sonic-core <--> iMac.
Then i have to connect the last two synths into the creamware..
Anyway.. added a new track to the archive.. My Beauty.. i have 2 others. but they need proper naming and id3 tag before adding them.

working on some new stuff... coming back to the sampling and all the fun it gives.

Well.. after doing some breakbeat i needed to get back to the chillout style i so much love...
I am fare from finished, but i have gotten a start. I started out working up a pad patch on the emu, by layering the oscillators on my Novation Nova, then sample it down as a raw sample without filters or anything from the nova. two keys was sampled C3 and C4, then i just layered it on the emu, worked out the filters and cords to create a good lushy pad. adding a nice delay effect made it realy good.
Then i started with the drums. i have tons of singleshot drums on my computer which i am moving over to my emu... it takes a bit time with the zip, but when i have it on the hard drive, its rather easy to dial up the samples i need. Some filter works on the drums.. and layering.. i am running the kit on 3 parts using diffrent effects and filter settings.
Piano is holy grail on esx24, with filter and some modulators i worked up. then ran through the rfx for some ambience delay.
The chant voice is my own, with a slight tuning.
i am considering sample it down to the emu, then play it off like a sampler with the filter possibilities.
the cut is 2 min.. not very much.. but its a start

Imac in the house
Well.. there hasnt been much music lately.. obviously because Mathias takes a lot of time. Anyway, i have aquired an Imac. The Imac has taken the space of my old winXP music pc. BUT i cant start before i have bought a new soundcard. i am looking at the TC Konnekt 24D http://www.procom.no/infoShop/isProductDisplayer.php/details/23696 but its a bit expencive 
. Logic 8 (probably express) will be my sequencer of choice. looking forward to the future.. hopefully i will manage to pull out some music from my brain 
Build in Vocoder on the Emu sampler (RFX-32)
Yepp.. yesterday i tested out the vocoder, after reading about it in the rfx-32 manual. I am not in desperat need of robotic voices, but its nice to have the function. But the real fun started when i used (break beat) Drumloop as carrier, then a rez bass as modulator.. i also tested with AHH sound as modulator. Where i made the drumloop as a non-transpose.It worked almost like a gate on the modulator, blending in sound from both parts. Sounds sweet. I will without doubt add that in my next track to spice up the beat .

[214] – Time trouble
Well.. last night (04. july 2007) i manage to get a good workflow.. but it all ended to early.. not because my head was empty.. but because i had to go to bed...
Anyway.. i finaly manage to find a theme in my track.. The last few tracks have been a bit empty.. Because I havent managed to sort out any image for the soundscape.. its ended up been just music.. with no big feelings..
finaly feel that i have some expression again. But it dosn't mean that its mellow chillout.. because its not.. its rather angry break music. .
Anyway.. i havent found the excact title yet.. but the title will contain "shark".. and this is the reason why:
I extracted this nice sample from the movie "The Beach" with leonardo di caprio where he talks about a shark attack. I also sampled my Wife "Ahh"ing. I am trying to build a feeling of beeing under water.. but not this crystal lovely images you see on Discovery.. more a cynical.. hard.. rough place with a touch of evil. A place where the stronges predators of them all survive. I have some work left on the ambience.. but its getting there.. The beat is pritty much in box.. rather banging stuff..
Tech stuff:
This track relies heavy on the Emu on the drum and bass. And i can't say it enough.. that emu is just amazing.. its like it does the music for me.... It sounds so analouge that i have sometimes a hard time understanding its a digital sampler..

Here is a patch example of an emulator patch made by sampling down 3 position of Waldorf microwave2 chorus2 wavetable, and crossfading between them.
There are some filtring there aswell.. but its very easy to spot whats filtring and whats "wavetable cycling"

Music gear
well.. i have a page called Music gear. I just wanted to leverage a bit on what gear i am using, and how... why?? because i don't have anything else to write about .
As you can see here on the photo. i am having an emu e6400 ultra, Korg M1r, Novation Nova, korg AM8000R and Line6 FilterPro.
I am also having a creamware card which i am using to pull some synths from (mostly Vectron, Modular III and U Know 007). I am also having a PreSonus TubePRE as a mic preamp.
Basses and stuff: i mostly uses my Nova.. which i sample down to the emu.
Drums: I have lots of singleshot drum samples on my computer which i record onto the sampler one by one (i dont have any interface for transfare samplesto the emu atm.). Then i might make a drum arrangement which i sample down to the emu and uses as a drum loop.. depends on what i am after .
Pads: I use what suits me on pads.. but after i got the Emu i have started to create base sounds on synths.. (creamware, nova, etc), then sample it down, and layer it on the emu. That works very well for me.. since the emu produces very much the sound i like. and the filters opens for much creativity.
Leads: again.. i use what works.. lately i have used much of the creamware U Know 007.. directly.. and the Modular III.
I dont use the Korg too much.. but i am seeing some possibility to sample it down to the emu now. The Korg AM8000R is used as a send FX directly in sonar.. which gives me the possibility to add sweet ambient reverb on any tracks/softsynth.
The Line6 FilterPro has been sick for a good amount of time.. until i opened it up to find out that a internal cable had just slipped out of its plug.. so after replugging.. it worked like a charm.. i am still trying to figure out how to include it in a good setup.. it can warp out some intressting sounds..
I have ditched my mixer, and are using an ADAT 8x8 interface which are right now connected to my creamware.. i have the RME card which can handle it.. and i am considering using it as a master mixer.. but i realy realy need another adat interface.. 8x8 is not enough .
I have done some E-mu sampler first-aid
Well.. i suddely found out that my 13 GB large ide disk that was installed in my sampler was almost filled to the brim... so i wanted to push the samples from the disk over to a new 40gb disk.. but i don't have a clue how to do that??!!! so i ended up an empty 40gb harddrive then formate it to fat. so now i am sampleless.. and my last project will not restore but it dosnt mean too much to me.. because i do my own sampling. but if someone told me how to move over the samples from the old disk i would be very happy .

Bass: Emu, sampled from my Nova, layred and fixed in emu. Used RFX compressor.
Sweet & Pads: Emu, sampled from my Nova, layred and fixed. Used RFX reverb.
Rhodes: Premade emu sample (it was on my harddisk )
Other synth sound: Juno 106 emulator from my Creamware card.
Feedback are welcome. It was a blast making the track.. its not eq-ed on the bottom.. so don't play it too loud on crappy pc speakers..
